How long does a central AC last?
A well-maintained central air conditioner typically lasts 12–15 years. Here's what affects lifespan and when to plan a replacement.
Average lifespan
Most central AC units last between 12 and 15 years with regular maintenance. Units in harsh climates or on oversized systems may wear out sooner.
What shortens or extends lifespan
Regular filter changes, annual tune-ups and keeping the outdoor unit clear extend life. Oversizing, poor drainage and refrigerant leaks can shorten it.
Signs it may be time to replace
Frequent repairs, rising energy bills, warm air output, or a unit over 15 years old. If a major repair approaches a third of replacement cost, replacement often wins.
